What We Offer
Mannkal sponsors students to learn at think tanks and research centres around the world. Since 1997, over 1,000 students have benefited from this once-in-a-lifetime experience. Mannkal gives students real-life exposure to the business world, builds their professional skills and networks and teaches them how to apply the philosophy of limited government and free enterprise. Our students return with new ideas, skills and enthusiasm to become actively involved in improving Australia. Many actually receive job offers from their internship hosts upon graduation, to start their careers in cities like Washington DC, Berlin, London or Hong Kong!
The Internship Experience
Internships take place during the Australian university semester breaks: mid-year and end-of-year. Mid-year internships generally run for 5-6 weeks in June and July, and end-of-year placements usually run for 8-9 weeks over January and February. While on internship, students attend the office of their host think-tank every weekday during normal working hours. Internships are voluntary and interns are not paid for their services.
The tasks undertaken by interns vary greatly between think-tanks. Some focus on one or two major projects for the duration of the internship; others will expect the intern to cope with multiple tasks. Some think-tanks work together with the intern to develop a project in an area that interests the intern.
Interns often attend a student conference while on internship. These have included Freedom Fest in Las Vegas, Students for Liberty in Washington DC and Cambridge Freedom Week in London. At these conferences, students gain valuable knowledge about liberty, economics and free societies, as well as networking and professional relations skills.
Host Think Tanks
Mannkal has a wide international network of host think tanks that accept our students. From the US and Canada to the UK, Europe, New Zealand, Hong Kong and more – the opportunities are boundless! For more information, view our Host Think Tanks page.
Mannkal covers all necessary expenses for the internship, administered through the intern’s university. The funding includes airfares, accommodation, travel insurance, visa fees, any conference expenses and a small living allowance.
Interns are responsible for making all their own travel arrangements but Mannkal provides significant guidance. Interns are required to attend pre-departure briefings with Mannkal to ensure that they are completely prepared. This includes being equipped for the travel process and, most importantly, being ready to provide value to their host think-tank from the minute they arrive.
A Mannkal internship is just the beginning as opportunities open up for successful interns after returning to Perth. Many Mannkal interns have been employed by their hosts or other organisations as a direct result of the internship. Mannkal often assists interns to seek employment upon return, and we recommend high-performing interns to the many organisations that contact us seeking potential staff. Our top Alumni have the exclusive opportunity to meet with a Mannkal Board Member to explore opportunities in Perth and worldwide.
As a Mannkal Alumnus you will also have the opportunity to attend Alumni-only functions and be invited to opportunities and events within the community. You will share your experiences with other students and develop valuable mentoring relationships with our Mannkal Ambassadors and Advisory Councillors. You may also have your articles and research projects published by our partner think-tanks all over the world.

Applications for 2017 End of Year Internship closed on August 6th. Applications are now open for 2018 Mid-Year Internships!
Our multi-step application process involves getting to know you through research reports, events, interviews, interactive seminars and group discussions. Attendance and participation at our events and seminars is an essential component of the selection procedure. The process can take several months, beginning with your application – so the sooner you apply the better!
Mid-Year Internship applications close in February, and places are determined around April/May. End of Year Internship applications close in August, and places are finalised in October/November.
Students who are not successful in receiving a scholarship in one intake may still be eligible for the next intake. The longer we have to get to know you, the better we are able to potentially match you with a suitable host think-tank.
Now is the time to apply, whether you’re in first or last year at University.
These scholarships are open to Western Australia-based undergraduate and postgraduate students enrolled in a Western Australian university*. Attendance and participation at our seminars and other events is a requirement. Above all, Mannkal values entrepreneurialism and enthusiasm for a free and open society. We consider students from across all faculties and departments. Course marks are one consideration, but this should not exclude students who have made contributions in other areas. Some of these volunteer positions benefit from formal study of economics and public policy, although a keen interest and awareness of the philosophical concepts behind these subjects is more important. We are looking for students who are interested in the future of Western Australia and Australia and who would gain from seeing how applying free market and libertarian ideas can improve the lives of all citizens.
