Advisory Council

Mannkal’s Advisory Council is a volunteer group of leading libertarians who reside both in Australia and across the world. They offer their insights to improve Mannkal’s programs and provide special opportunities to Mannkal scholars during their international internships. While visiting Perth, many Advisory Council members present at student seminar and provide individual mentoring and guidance to Mannkal scholars.

Sarah Basden
London
Sarah has extensive experience in senior corporate communications roles, including working with multi-national corporations in the areas of non-government organisation partnerships, investor relations, media relations and corporate social responsibility. Currently based in the UK, Sarah is working with Rio Tinto as a principal adviser on the Rio Tinto corporate NGO partnership programme. She has also been involved with a number of educational organisations such as Atlantic College and Dundee University in efforts to advance the capacity of bright students from around the globe.
Hannah Berdal
London
Hannah interned at the Lion Rock Institute (Hong Kong) in 2010 as a Mannkal Scholar. She holds a Bachelor of Laws (UWA) and was admitted as a solicitor in the Australian Capital Territory in 2016. Since then, she has been living and working in London at the prestigious Latham and Watkins LLB, at times being placed on assignments in Dubai and Saudi Arabia. Hannah is also the Editor of the Austrian Economics Center (Vienna) monthly newsletter.
Naomi Brockwell
New York
Naomi Brockwell has been making videos about bitcoin since 2013. She was policy associate at the New York Bitcoin Center from 2013-2015, producer for the 2015 feature documentary Bitcoin: The End of Money as We Know It (Best International Documentary, Anthem Film Festival; Winner of Special Jury Prize, Amsterdam Film Festival), producer for Stossel, a producer for the blockchain sci-fi TV series HardFork, co-author of the children's book "Billy's Bitcoin", and emcees at least 20 blockchain conferences a year.
Emma Crisp
Sydney
Emma has extensive experience in marketing and brand management. Previously Mannkal’s own Marketing Coordinator (2009-2011), Emma now works as a Brand Manager for St George’s bank in Sydney. Emma holds a Bachelor of Arts (Politics) and a Bachelor of Commerce (Marketing and Business Law), both from UWA.
Emma Dyce
Perth
Emma was a 2014 End-of-Year Scholar at the Atlas Network in Washington DC. Emma holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Economics and Business Law) and a Master of Business Information Systems, both from UWA. Emma subsequently completed another Master’s degree, this time in International and European Business at the EM Strasbourg Business School. Having returned to Perth, Emma is now an Associate Consultant at Azure Consulting.
Riyad Hammad
Dubai
Riyad is based in Dubai, where he has worked for more than 22 years in the banking, contracting & real estate sectors. He is currently the Treasury Director of one of the largest contracting companies in the region. Riyayd has a keen interest in fintech innovation and cryptocurriences. He holds an MBA in Finance and various financial, banking and treasury management related qualifications.
Felicity Karageorge
Sydney
Felicity holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Economics and Finance) and a Bachelor of Laws, both from the University of Notre Dame. Felicity was a 2010 End-of-Year Scholar at The Frontier Center for Public Policy in Canada. She has been working at Johnson Winter and Slattery in Sydney since her graduation, currently as an Associate in their Legal Disputes team.
Ashley Klingenberg
Canberra
Ashley was a 2014 Mid-Year Scholar at the Lithuanian Free Market Institute. Ashley was Mannkal’s freelance photographer from 2013 to 2016. Currently working as a Project Officer for the Australian Public Service in Canberra, Ashley holds a Bachelor of Arts (Political Science and International Relations) from UWA.

Benjamin has been writing speeches, presentations and for print publications since 2005. He has written across a broad spectrum of areas such as economics, philosophy, leadership and business management.
Luke McGrath
New York
Having studied Political Economy at UWA, Luke went on to be a 2008 End-of-Year Scholar at the Lion Rock Institute in Hong Kong. He has since moved to the US and is currently the Managing Editor of the Laissez Faire Letter at Publishing Nation Inc in the Greater New York Area. Luke has extensive experience in public relations and also holds a Bachelor of Commerce from Curtin University, majoring in Social Science, Economics, Politics and International Relations.
Sofie O'Mara
Washington DC
Sofie was a 2015 End-of-Year Scholar at the Atlas Network in Washington DC. She returned to Perth to finish her studies at UWA, a Bachelor of Commerce (Marketing and Human Resources), whilst also working as Mannkal’s Social Media Coordinator. Sofie returned to DC to intern with the Cato Institute and subsequently joined their team as a fulltime Research Assistant.
Jessica Pendal
Perth
Jessica grew up in the mining town of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, and moved to Perth to pursue a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Commerce (Corporate Finance and Financial Accounting) at UWA. She has since built an impressive career in the mining industry, specifically within market research and analysis. Jessica is currently a Senior Commercial Analyst with Rio Tinto.
Steven Schwartz
Sydney
Steven has a strong background in education, health, governance and ethics. Previously the Vice-Chancellor of Murdoch University, Macquarie University and Brunel University (UK), Steven is now Board Chairman of the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA). He is also a Senior Fellow at the Centre for Independent Studies.
Yuliya Tychkivska

Yuliya is the Executive Director of The Aspen Institute in Kiev, an educational and policy studies organisation whose mission is to foster leadership based on enduring values and to provide a nonpartisan venue for dealing with critical issues. Yuliya frequently travels the world to speak at libertarian events.
Brad Walmsley
Geneva
Brad is a Director of Lombard Odier Darier Hentsch & cie, one of Switzerland’s oldest private banks, based in Geneva. Brad was a law graduate from the University of Western Australia and holds an MBA from IMD Business School in Lausanne. His career has spanned several industries, as a financial journalist with The West Australian in the early 1980s, stockbroker and co-founder of Porter Western in Perth, as a private equity fund manager in Perth and Sydney and then as a banker in Geneva since the early 1990s. His advisory work with leading businessmen and family offices means that today he splits his time between the UK, Switzerland, the Middle East, India, Singapore and Australia. He continues to write for several publications and has had essays published by, amongst others, the Institute for Economic Affairs in London.
