Internships

Mannkal sponsors students to learn at think tanks and research centres around the world. Since 1997, over 1,000 students have benefited from this once-in-a-lifetime experience. Mannkal gives students real-life exposure to the business world, builds their professional skills and networks and teaches them how to apply the philosophy of limited government and free enterprise. Our students return with new ideas, skills and enthusiasm to become actively involved in improving Australia. Many actually receive job offers from their internship hosts upon graduation, to start their careers in cities like Washington DC, Berlin, London or Hong Kong!

The Internship Experience
The internship experience lasts from 6 to 12 weeks during the Australian university semester breaks: mid-year and end-of-year. While on internship, students attend the office of their host think-tank every weekday during normal working hours Internships are undertaken on a voluntary basis and interns are not paid for their services.

The tasks undertaken by interns vary greatly between think-tanks. Some think-tanks focus on one or two major projects for the duration of the internship; others will expect the intern to cope with multiple tasks at a time. Some think-tanks work together with the intern to develop a project in an area that interests the intern. Tasks can be research-oriented, analytical, or focused on report writing or development.
Interns often attend a student conference while on internship. These have included Freedom Fest in Las Vegas, Students for Liberty in Washington DC, the Manning Centre Conference in Ottawa and Cambridge Freedom Week in London. These conferences introduce interns to a broad range of other students and professionals to gain valuable knowledge about liberty, economics and free societies, as well as networking and professional relations skills.

Host Think Tanks

Mannkal has a wide international network of host think tanks that accept our students. From the US and Canada to the UK, Europe, New Zealand, Hong Kong and more, the opportunities are boundless! For more information, view our Host Think Tanks page.

Internship Inclusions

Mannkal covers all necessary expenses for the internship, and the bursary is administered through the intern’s university. The funding includes airfares, accommodation, travel insurance, visa fees, any conference expenses and a small living allowance.

Interns are responsible for making all their own travel arrangements, and Mannkal provides significant guidance. Interns are required to attend pre-departure briefings with Mannkal to ensure that they are completely prepared for the internship experience. This includes being equipped for the travel process itself and, most importantly, being ready to provide strong value to their host think-tank from the minute they arrive.

Post-Internship Experience

A Mannkal internship is just the beginning for successful participants as opportunities open up for successful interns after returning to Perth. Many Mannkal interns have been employed by their hosts or other organisations as a direct result of the internship. Mannkal often assists successful interns employment upon return, and we recommend high-performing interns to the many organisations that contact us seeking potential staff. Our top Alumni have the exclusive opportunity to meet with a Mannkal Board Member to explore opportunities in Perth and worldwide.

As a Mannkal Alumnus you will also have the opportunity to attend Alumni-only functions and be invited to opportunities and events within the community. You will share your experiences with other students and develop valuable mentoring relationships with our Mannkal Ambassadors and Advisory Councillors. You may also have your articles and research projects published by our partner think-tanks all over the world.
